“Aren’t we a little too old to be playing board games?” – Dr. No One EVER

Why? Simply because board games are awesome. That’s why! It’s not only about eating or drinking or watching episode after episode of Game of Thrones. It’s also about game night! It doesn’t matter about the theme of a reunion (unless it’s a funeral, but even then…) board games and strategy games can almost always appeal to all ages and personalities and be great silence breakers, bond makers and even be conversation starters.

We all remember hours of fun with our favorite game like the classic game Hungry Hippo, snake and ladders, scavenger hunt, card games, and other great icebreaker games - those memories stay with us forever. Nowadays, however, it's all about game play. With board games being so evolved, great game play means everything and there's a plethora of different fun and long-lasting categories, as well as role-play stories to play with fun board games.

Forget a standard card game or trivial pursuits - nothing lightens up a reunion or game night with friends more than a series of entertaining and challenging classic games designed for one of the main of reasons we are alive: FUN. “Dear God, finally! The games!” – You at an otherwise boring party/reunion.

We just want to bring out the booze and have some foul-mouthed witty-humored light-hearted FUN!

So, naturally, we always get our attention dragged to those games in which we have to complete or assign challenges, use our ever-expanding superior knowledge to solve problems and answer questions, or some good ol’ body language to convey something.

All in all, we love competition but it’s always about the thrill, the fun of it. So, without further ado, I must present you with a carefully-crafted list containing some of the best board games around for adults.

1. Curses!

General Specs:

  • Number of players: 3-6
  • Playtime: 25 m +/-
  • Age: 12+
  • Fun level: WOOO!

Speaking about challenges, this is one packed with them! With Curses! you will know what it’s like to go through life problems with plenty of handicaps and obstacles (wait, don’t we already do that on a daily basis?).

I know “Curses” sounds grim, but this game is just the opposite - you’ll have lots of fun seeing how you and your friends struggle to comply with the challenges of the game. Check out what I mean:

How do you play it?

  1. In Curses! each player starts by drawing a Curse card and placing it face-up on the table. From this moment on you receive a curse, a FUN curse, which could be something like “You can’t move your arms” or “You can’t speak”.

  1. After this, every turn you have to draw 2 cards:
      • A Challenge card: this card shows you one action you must do (or act out a role, tell a story, etc.) while keeping in mind your curse. For example, you have to draw a dog on a paper. This sounds easy, but your curse is “You can’t move your arms”, so have fun trying to draw without moving your arms!

      • A Curse card: you give a new curse to another player and they have to stick to it.
  1. You have to obey the curse at all times and if someone sees you flapping your arms or speaking when you’re not allowed to, they can call on you by ringing the central bell. After 3 curses are lifted from you, you’re out!

The winner is the last person standing completely cursed! Yay!

Definitely, one of the craziest and funniest board games for adults you’ll enjoy!

2. Smart Ass!

smart ass board game image

 General Specs:
  • Number of players: 2-8
  • Playtime: 30 m +/-
  • Age: 12+
  • Fun level: Fant ‘ass’ tic!

This is a fierce, thrilling, and fun soft brainpower competition - finally a chance to be a smartass without being judged. In this totally fun trivia game, you get no turns because everyone is playing at the same time every turn. It will be a fast-paced battle of brains so you better watch out for that one friend who knows it all!

How do you play it?

There are four categories to play with: Who am I? Where am I? What am I? and Hard ass. A player takes a question and reads it. The questions are made of a bunch of clues, while the player is reading everybody has the chance to yell the answer so you gotta be a fast ass too!

If your answer is wrong, you’re out for the round. The winner of the round advances further to the Smart Ass (the donkey ass in the center) and the first person to get there wins! Classic, huh?

You’ll have tons of fun with this game and you don’t have to be Einstein to win or to learn how to play it. GO FOR IT!

3. King of Tokyo

General Specs:

  • Number of players: 2-6
  • Playtime: 30 m +/-
  • Age: 8+
  • Fun level: ROAR

Ever wondered what it would feel like to be Godzilla and destroy the whole freaking city and that horrid deteriorated civilization that surrounds you? WELL, NOW YOU CAN FEEL IT!

How do you play it?

In King of Tokyo, you can be a huge robot, an alien, a mutant dinosaur (This is AWESOME if you ask me), and you know, the usual mayhem-inducing monsters Tokyo has to face with on a daily basis in real life. With this, I’m not going to bore you with technical details.

In summary, you have to beat the hell out of all the other players using six dice with different values (points, heal, attack, victory points 1, 2, 3), you choose your move like the magnificent evil beast you are, devise your strategy and squash your feeble friends!

After you humiliate them with your superior strength, you defend your turf until you reduce Tokyo to a wasteland!

Okay, what’s next…? OH!

4. Scythe

General Specs:

  • Number of players: 1-5
  • Playtime: 115m +/-
  • Age: 14+
  • Fun level: WOW

Now, this is a deep strategy game. Staged in an alternative reality during a time of war and tension in 1920s Europa, Scythe is truly a masterpiece which lets you choose from five different factions struggling to prosper in these difficult times.

How do you play it?

You pick a faction, establish your civilization, enlist new soldiers, gather resources, build, blow stuff up with mechs, conquer territory, slaughter your friends’ villagers and burn their houses. LOVELY!

This game is straight up badass, put your leader skills to the max and plan the best strategy to become the dominating faction. Each faction has different feats you can exploit to stand out. It also features an interesting combat mechanic in which your choices determine your fate.

If you have patience and you want to have lots of FUN while living an amazing story, I fully recommend this game.

General Specs:

  • Number of players: 3-6
  • Playtime: 5m
  • Age: 10+
  • Fun level: JUST PASS ME THE DANG THINGAMAJIG, STEVE!

Spaceteam is a fast-paced cooperative game which pretty much recreates what is like working on a group project in college. Hilarious mayhem ensues, nobody is sure about what to do and a lot of shouting happens!

How do you play it?

You’re aboard a malfunctioning spaceship, which is never good news, and every player has to fix many malfunctions in their own sector. You get a malfunction deck with the stuff that is not working properly, and a LOAD of disorganized tools with weird names scrambled among all the players.

The ordeal is finding the right tools to correct each of your malfunctions, which will have you yelling the wacky names of these at your already busy friends trying to coordinate things and fix everything, and, on top of it all, you and your party also have to deal with black holes and asteroid fields that need all of you to focus in order to survive.

There are no turns and everybody goes crazy till you win by fixing enough parts of the ship! GREAT!

6. What’s yours like?

General Specs:

  • Number of players: 4-20
  • Playtime: 45m +/-
  • Age: 12+
  • Fun level: Mine is big and black

You can find yourself laughing till you hit the floor dealing with this game. It’s all about trying to make one innocent person understand what you and your friends are describing through obscure clues such as “mine looks like an apple” or “my friends play with mine”.

How do you play it?

There’s one player in the hot seat. All the other players look at one of the 300+ words the game has to offer, and have to make up a truthful - yet not obvious - clue describing what their object is like.

You might find yourself making innuendos or nonsensical descriptions easily. Everything comes from the player, which is great! The player that guesses the word with the least amount of clues wins.

So, there you go. Don’t be dull - have some fun! Invite your friends over this weekend and plan a great time full of laughs and memorable moments. Alternatively, you can even throw a party and bust out one of these amazing board games, you’re guaranteed to have a blast!

Life is full of precious moments and you’re the one to create them. You also need board games in your life for this, we know, we’re scientists. GO, HAVE FUN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!
